Introduction

I have been an alcohol/drug counselor for 40 years in various modalities including: (Residential Treatment, Methadone Maintenance Clinics, Provider, County IDRC and currently Private Practice Setting)  I was a School Psychologist for 26 years.

It takes courage to face life problems, alcohol use/abuse and drug use/abuse

can be especially difficult because of the potential 'stigma' involved. However, they are life issues that can actually  " be fixed"

My counseling approach tends to be more pragmatic 'food for thought”, than lecturing.  Start by looking at two basic questions:  Why do I drink/use drugs? Do I like or need to use?  Usually, the answer is "like".

Now it is time to work on the reality of the situation. It is a journey in self-understanding/truth for the individual.  Learn to understand defense mechanisms, such as, rationalization, denial, justification, blame and how they work to defend the behavior in the individual's eyes. IT is Not Always an Easy Journey for the individual and family.

The goal is to learn to accept the reality of the situation and use this new insight and the available resources (AA, NA, Al-anon) to remain clean and sober.
